A Roti Machine

Is the thought of making dozens of chapatis over a hot stove make you hesitate to cook them at all?  I truly hope not because you will be missing out on a simple and delicious part of your diet.  There is a reason why chapatis are a staple food in many households around the world.  They are a great source of whole wheat and fiber and they can be enjoyed as part of a meal or simply by themselves.  It is definitely worth the work to learn how to make them.

If you want things to be a little easier, there is an appliance you can buy to remove some of the steps from the chapati making process.  You can buy a chapati maker and cook your chapatis without rolling out the dough first.  This machine will replace your rolling pin, the skillet and the stove.

The links below go to eBay auctions. On eBay you can find chapati makers made in India and brands other than Saachi.

Are you wondering how it works?  You will have to check your manufacturers instructions and warnings but I will give you a basic idea.

  1. Plug in the machine and allow it to heat.
  2. Place the ball of dough for one chapati, not in the middle but near the hinge of the chapati maker.
  3. Quickly press the top down on your dough to flatten it into the circular shape.  (Don’t let the top stay down, open it right away).
  4. Then cook the chapati just like you would on your stove.

I have a video that demonstrates the use of a roti machine.  It actually looks like a lot of fun.

Do you have a chapati maker yourself?  Do you care to share any tips on making the perfect chapati with a machine?  Remember you will probably still need lots of practice if you aren’t used to cooking chapatis but don’t give up.
